Are you planning your next beach holiday and need some inspiration on where to go? Look no further than the small seaside town of Porthcawl in South Wales, home to 7 different beaches to visit on your holiday (2 with Blue Flag awards) - you won't be disappointed.


There are 7 different beaches in Porthcawl and each one has something different to offer. From the busy, family-oriented entertainment of Sandy Bay to the unique pink rocks of Pink Bay. You can try surfing, sunbathing, or swimming at one of the two blue flag beaches - there really is something for everyone!


  1. Rest Bay Beach

Rest Bay is very popular with surfers of all skill levels, especially as Porthcawl is one of the most popular locations for surfing in Wales. The new state-of-the-art water sports centre overlooks Porthcawl’s Blue Flag Rest Bay beach, and provides the perfect base for adventure seekers eager to sample South Wales’ outdoor activity. Porthcawl Surf School, based at the centre, offers year round lessons and surf board hire as well as stand up paddle boards.

Join in on family activities such as rock pooling and beach arts and crafts with the Beach Academy Wales. Need a rest? Just pop upstairs to Rest Bay Café Bar which overlooks the whole of Rest Bay beach and offers food and drinks from breakfast to main meals.

With miles of fine, golden sand, It is very good for walking, as you can go along the Wales Coast Path to Pink Bay and beyond.


2. Pink Bay

Pink bay is a 15-minute walk from Rest Bay alongside the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, along the Wales Coast Path. This beach is much quieter, but still popular with locals and surfers, with golden sands and rocks that have a pink colour to them, hence the name 'Pink Bay'.


3. Sker Beach

Following the Wales coast path along further you'll find Sker Beach, a 20 minute walk from Rest Bay beach. This beach is mostly sandy and flat, making it one of Porthcawl's quieter beaches to visit, ideal for those quiet seaside strolls. This beach is ideal for walkers as it can only be accessed via Rest Bay beach or Kenfig Nature Reserve, which is another lovely place to visit.


4. Seafront Beach

In the centre of Porthcawl town is the Seafront Beach. This beach is largely tarmacked but makes an ideal location to sit on the steps and enjoy your fish and chips or ice cream! Seafront Beach is also the ideal location for exploring the rock pools, but is not safe for swimming. This beach is the best location for facilities, being in the centre of town with numerous shops and restaurants to choose from.



5. Sandy Bay/Coney Beach

Follow the the Porthcawl Promenade along from the Seafront beach and you'll reach Sandy Bay, named for being a mostly sandy beach with very few rocks. Sandy Bay is located in front of Coney Beach Fairground, with plenty of facilities available for the whole family. Coney Beach is also home to the Hi Tide amusement park, jam packed full of games and food and drink options too. This is a great fun filled day out for the entire family.


6. Newton Beach

This beach sits at the other end of Porthcawl to Rest Bay in the village of Newton. Newton Beach is popular for watersports activities such as jet skiing, windsurfing and power boating. This beach is great for walkers, as you can walk along the beach to Newton sand dunes, all the way along to the mouth of the river Ogmore. Newton Beach has miles of sand but can be rocky at parts. The beach itself doesn't have any facilities, however, Trecco Bay holiday park is only around the corner.


7. Trecco Bay Beach

Trecco Bay Beach site in between Newton Beach and Sandy Bay and is a 5 minute walk away from the holiday park. Trecco Bay is Porthcawl's second blue flag beach with excellent water quality, ideal for paddling and swimming.
